Local Book Awards

Does your state have a local book award that the children choose? How do you decide what books the children will vote on? What time frame / How long do the kids have to vote? Is your award solely a library award or do you work with the schools as well? How do you promote your award?

As you can tell I'm asking a lot of questions. Answer as many as you can. Trying to compare Delaware's award "Delaware Blue Hen Book Award" with other awards around the country.

Thanks,
Terri

Hi Terri! Sorry for the delayed response --holiday and all that. :>

I knew I heard something about a kid's choice award for the Multnomah County Library in Oregon. It's called the Young Readers Choice Awards. It seems to administered by the PNLA and it covers the northwestern states. You might find some good answers to your questions in the FAQ.

I also noticed that Multnomah collects book reviews by kids. There are many other libraries doing that as well. Anyone want to tell us how it's working?

Good luck!

Maine has the Lupine and Katahdin Awards each year.
A flyer of winners is posted here. The Lupine Award is designed to honor a living author or illustrator who is a resident of Maine, or who has created a work whose focus is Maine, as shown through the work's characterization, plot or setting. The Katahdin Award is a lifetime achievement award recognizing an outstanding body of work of children’s literature in Maine. The Katahdin Award is designed to honor a living Maine author or illustrator.
