CROSSROADS November 5, 2008

As surely as the leaves change color each autumn, Libraryland counts on another exciting fall conference season.
WebJunction has been on the road, presenting sessions on a wide range of subjects such as online learning, "unmarketing", community engagement, ubiquitous computing, library futures, and even science fiction. We've posted these presentations on the new Conference Presentations page, where you too can upload and share any presentations that you have given to a library audience.

>     Latinos and Public Library Perceptions
In partnership with TRPI, WebJunction surveyed more than 2,860 Latinos about their library use and perceptions of libraries. The results indicate that 54% percent of the Latino population visited libraries in the past year, and that Latinos hold positive perceptions of libraries. Read the findings, download the survey tool, or register for the November 18 webinar with the authors of the report.

Kicking off our December focus on libraries in tough economic times, Christie Koontz will present a webinar about the first systematic nationwide study she co-authored on the impact of public library closures and facility location. Attendees will hear recommendations for libraries to prevent closure, how closure impacts patrons, and where new library facilities should be opened.

>     Implement an Online Help Desk
TechAtlas for Libraries offers a free online help desk tool for reporting and tracking technology issues and creating a customized knowledge base for your library. Attend this one-hour webinar to learn how to use this tool.

Maine Demonstrates Library's Value
WebJunction-Maine is featuring a Library Use Calculator, a handy tool in these economically troubled times. They also recently wrapped up a presentation at the Maine Libraries Conference and are sharing resources on library automation.

Winter Needs and Giving Back
For many, the prospect of high gas and oil prices, dipping temperatures, and shrinking budgets makes the winter holidays a not-so-jolly time of year. Last winter we started a discussion on this very topic. Contribute your own ideas and answers to the following questions. How do the winter months and winter holiday seasons affect your capacity or personal drive to serve your patrons? What are you doing that works? What are the challenges that you're facing?
