This is breaking grant news from American Libraries Online:

The Gates Foundation Commits $17 Million to Keeping Libraries Connected.

These are challenge grants that will go to state libraries to help them serve as technology resources for local libraries. Applications have been sent to all state library agencies.

Has anyone else heard anything new about this?

Is it now at the individual state library level?

This isn't really breaking news. I think the grant applications went out to state libraries in summer of 2002. Applications are for grants in 2003 and 2004.

The grants are for 4 different areas, hardware upgrades, internet connection upgrades, training, and technical support. States can apply for any or all of these. There are requirements for matching funds from the state.

If you curious about this, you should probably contact you state library.

As an example of what some states are doing with their Staying Connected Grants, North Carolina I believe is using their funds for more training. You might want to contact them to find out more information, but I will be heading up there a bit between Jan-March 2004 to do some of that training.
