Locked out of Bios with a bad hard drive
4:21 PM EST 1/8/07
Hi Everyone,

I posted here earlier this year, with a bad hard drive and I believe Dale helped me out. I cannot find my old post, but that is Ok since this is a little bit of a different problem. On one of my old Gates machines, another hard drive went bad. I have only been here at the library for about 5 months, so I don't know the Bios passwords that have been set on these computers. I have found some possible passwords, but they are not working. I am pretty sure I will need to get into the Bios to set up a new hard drive. Actually, I thought I could at least check out the Bios to see if it is recognizing the drive at all. It is giving me a message of "inaccessible boot device", no matter how I try to get into it. In Safe Mode I get the same message.

I have looked at the motherboard and cannot seem to find a jumper that I could remove to flash the Bios. I am not sure if I remove the battery, if it will erase other things that I will need later.

So, I guess my question is, how can I get into the Bios if I can't get past the password? The model # is: ATXSTF MNT E4600 - SE GLF and manufacture date is 2/16/01. Any suggestions? Thank you so much in advance.

Deb, are you still having problems?

Removing the battery should not affect anything but the bios. It is there to keep the bios info alive and that is pretty much all it does. In fact, after this amount of time, it might be a good idea to just replace the battery anyway.

I am pretty sure there is a jumper on those 4600's. We don't have those anymore, but the Gateway site should have the info you need.
