Illinois OCLC Users Group

The purpose of the Illinois OCLC Users' Group is to promote the use of the OCLC database and related ILLINET/OCLC services for libraries and educational institutions for educational, literacy, scientific, and research purposes.

IOUG provides training and continuing education programs; ensures participation of the Illinois users of OCLC in planning and implementing programs connected with OCLC in Illinois; serves as the means of organized input from Illinois users of OCLC to the manager of the ILLINET/OCLC office and the Illinois OCLC Program, and serves as a vehicle for communication concerning OCLC among users of OCLC and the Illinois OCLC Program.

To become a member of IOUG, visit the web site, or download the 2009 IOUG Membership Application. You may also join the ISL-OCLC News, a generalized mailing list for announcements related to ILLINET/OCLC Services in Illinois libraries.

Cataloging Boot Camp!

CBC Workshop LogoOne of the training programs provided by IOUG is the Cataloging Boot Camp. Originally a partnership of the IOUG (Illinois OCLC User Group), the Statewide Cataloging Standards Committee, and three of the Regional Library Systems: Lewis & Clark Library System, Shawnee Library System and Rolling Prairie Library System, the training was funded by an LSTA grant from the Illinois State Library.

This purpose of the partnership was to develop training materials for copy catalogers and to educate instructors to present copy cataloging training sessions throughout the state with the ultimate goal of providing better access to materials through the online catalogs: OCLC, SILC and the Regional LLSAPs. The project was modeled after the Library of Congress' Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program, a train-the-trainers program that has been instrumental in providing specialized cataloging training.

Covering everything from MARC format to matching and editing and authority control, the materials for the original 11 sessions comprising this excellent training were developed by a cadre of experts* and are available for your use as downloadable documents.

* Authors and developers for the CBC Workshop materials are Lynette Fields, Shelley Stone, Kathy Nystrom and Lori Murphy.
