BCHS was awarded a $31,450 LSTA grant through the Illinois State Library, entitled BCHS Access.  This In Sync with Technology grant has provided students access to technology equipment, specifically 20 new computers, 2 printers, 2 scanners, and a student presentation station which includes a projector, SMART Board and laptop with wireless Internet access in the BCHS media center.

Some of the projects that have be completed cooperatively with the media center staff and selected teachers include activities on smoking, careers, American history, American authors, and U. S. Presidents.  In addition, students will be trained on 21st century research and information literacy skills such as how to do effective Internet research, cite online sources, copyright law and plagiarism.  The library staff worked with the BCHS Gen Y class to redesign the BCHS library website to include Web 2.0 initiatives, such as blogging for book discussions, and 24/7 access to a librarian through “Ask Away”.

The BCHS library staff members, Mrs. Marla Harp and Mrs. Judy Lampley will be partnering with Ms. Erin Steinsultz, Director of the Benton Public Library, on how to use the technology tools effectively for software applications and access to online resources, including the catalogs at BCHS and the Benton Public Library.
