Ever need to move text or graphics from one section of a document to another section quickly? Or, do you ever simply want to refresh your memory about what appears in another section? The next time you want to view another part of your document without losing your place, split the document window in Microsoft Word.

The split box in Word allows you to split the document window into two panes so that you can view different parts of a document at the same time. In addition to viewing, you can add or delete text in each section, cut text from one section and paste it to another section, or copy formats from one section of a document to the other, just as if you were working with two different documents. The split box is especially useful when you work with long documents. It is simple to use, but effective.

To Split a Document Window

Point to the split box at the top of the vertical scroll bar. When the pointer changes to do one of the following:

To split the window into two panes the same size:

  • Double-click the split box.

  1. Split the window into two panes of different sizes:

  • Drag the split box to the position you want.

You can also split a document with the Split command on the Window menu in Word. This displays the split bar. Simply point to the location where you want to divide the window, and then click to set it in place. When you are ready to return to a single widow, click Remove Split on the Window menu.

You can change the size of the windows or return to a single window at any time.

To change the size of the windows

  • Drag the split bar to the new position.

    1. To return to a single window

    • Double-click the split bar.

      1. If You Don't See the Split Box

      2. The split box might not be visible on your screen if the vertical scroll bar is not displayed, or if your screen displays the Document Map. The Document Map displays an outline of the document headings in a separate pane on the left side of the document window.

      3. To make the split box visible, do the following:

      • On the View menu, click Document Map to cancel the selection

        1. To select the Vertical scroll bar

        • On the Tools menu, click Options .

        • Click the View tab.

        • In Word 2000, under Show, select the Vertical scroll bar check box.
