Linux session control??
1:38 PM EDT 5/5/06
We have a Linux server and are searching for session control software to work with our microsoft public access computers. Session control being defined as a program that will limit the amount of time a person can be on a public access computer. Any thoughts on what we can use?

Hello and welcome!

It sounds like you're exploring the territory of Open Source for public access computing --more power to you. I don't have a clue about OS myself, but I can point you to a library that is committed to and steeped in it. It's the Howard County Library, the subject of one of our Library of the Month stories. I'm sure the IT director and team would be glad to share their knowledge --the email is at the end of the article.

Good luck and let us know what you discover.

You could try openkiosk (http://openkiosk.sourceforge.net/)
Alternatively, if you're purely just wanting something to time sessions, have a look at the Public Internet Terminal Timer (http://mail.portsmouth.lib.oh.us/PITT/)

I just found this open source PC Reservation System from Pre-Book.

"Pre-Book is a full featured, affordable, PC reservation system which also integrates with our public access computing software. With Pre-Book patrons can book time on a station from home, office, school or the library itself."

I don't know anything more about it, other than the link came from the Library Success wiki, included in a list of "great, free open source tools for libraries." If anyone has used this, I'd like to hear some details.

I believe the software Howard County uses for their public PCs is Groovix. http://groovix.com/ I'm not 100% sure if this offers session control or not.
