Applying the Results of An Environmental Scan
3:53 PM EDT 7/12/05
Once you've scanned your environment, what do you do with the results? If you've ever worked diligently on a long range plan and then watched it gather dust on a shelf, you know how disheartening that process can be.
Alternatively, the results can be extremely exhilarating: At the 2005 ALA Conference, Dwight McInvaill, the director of the Georgetown County Library in South Carolina, told me how he'd used the themes in the environmental scan, especially the sections on how gaming and its impact on young people are changing the information picture, to corral a lot of extra money for a new branch library in a rural part of his county. (By the way, this was at a meeting that had nothing to do with the scan---we happen to serve together on the same ALA committee.)
This subject area will be a place for us to discuss the implementation of your ideas. How have you seen success with your plans? How have you used the ideas you've identified in your plan (whether it's an environmental scan-based plan, or some other form of planning) to make a difference in your community?
