Hello, September round three trainers!
I just wanted to start this thread to keep us going with the same enthusiasm and energy that carried us on during the institute in Seattle.

Maybe posting our progress, asking questions or making suggestions would be a great way to find support and encouragement to our efforts.

I had a great time with all of you and I'm sure you are going to do a terrific job, as you showed during the presentations. Life can be tough, however, and we all need a hand every now and then, even if it is only a presence, saying "We are with you, we understand."

Hi Susana,

Thanks for starting this discussion. We are hosting our first training in MA on October 25th. Hagar and I will be presenting and are meeting this Thursday to tweak curriculum and materials.

Seattle was wonderful (and not just the complimentary 5-minute massages in the hotel lounge!). I hope, as you say, that we are all able to maintain our energy and commitment over the next year.

Are any of you like...super tired this week!?! I think the travel, excitement and craziness of being back at work is catching up!

Anyway, some people asked if I would share my "close your eyes" thing I did during our state presentation. It was during Module 3: Providing Services, on page 21.

I was reiterating that we need to really look at ourselves and look at where OUR values and OUR cultural beliefs come from before we can understand values and beliefs of others. I asked you all to close your eyes and refer back to the activity where we talked about our names. Then I asked a series of questions.:

- Where did your name come from?
- Did you have any siblings growing up? Were you an only child? How did your older siblings influence you? How did YOU influence any younger siblings?
What is your education level? How has that impacted you?
What were your religious beliefs growing up?
Where were you born?
Were you raised in a big city? A small town?

(I'm sure you can think of more!)
Then I asked: Who is (insert name of person at workshop)? Who influenced (insert another name)? How did (insert another name) influence others?
Who are You?

Wait a few seconds and ask them to open their eyes. Hopefully it will get their minds thinking!

We have our first dates in November-December already, we are conducting one each in Berks Co., Lancaster and Easton, PA. Claudia is coping with coordination issues, and we are contacting our community leaders. I thought to summarize the interviews and give my participants an advance copy so they can make more informed questions to the panelists. Please post your progress and your ideas, so we can all energize from them!

Yes, I made it back safely, and I think I'm finally feeling more like my "normal" self this week. I hope everyone else is, too!
My first workshop is November 29 in Minocqua, WI. I should have some assistance in presenting, which will be great! That's great that you and Stephanie can present together.

Next week is our big WLA (Wisconsin Library Association) Conference, held in Green Bay, so many of us are involved with that. Once that is done, I will have to kick it in high gear!

Hi, just a quick followup to the message about Marc Prensky's article on digital immigrants; I did contact him, and mentioned that I would like to use the article, and that other Round 3 trainers might like to use some of the concepts also, and I received this message: "Please feel free to use whatever works!" So I think we can go ahead.

Hello to all our colleagues in other states. Massachusetts held the first of nine trainings last Thursday in Waltham (a city located in the metro Boston area). Since it was our first training we felt pleased to reach 14 people. We have been widely advertising subsequent meetings over the next seven months and hope to reach many more people. Eleanor Stafford and Hagar Shirman served as our first set of trainers and did a great job! They are both naturals.

Our community panel was made up of three people. (We were so glad that they showed up!) Moreover, they did a great job of communicating the needs/issues of the local Hispanic community. People asked a number of questions and some suggestions about how the library could better respond came to the fore as a result. Participants seemed to be genuinely pleased with the training curriculum and materials that were offered. I think the room that we trained in was a bit small and am happy that our subsequent sessions will be roomier and give people more of a chance to move around. All in all, we looked upon this as a learning experience for the future.

Our next session will be in Western Massachusetts. A good number of participants have already signed up. Nancy Rea, Hagar and I will be doing the training for that session.

Hello everyone,

As Shelley wrote earlier, Eleanor and I presented the first workshop for Massachusetts librarians last Thursday. I really enjoyed the experience, and the reactions we received from the participants echoed my attitude after I was first exposed to this material.

In the weeks prior to the presentation, Eleanor and I reworked the curriculum and divided up the different modules so that they would work better for our presentation style. Things went pretty smoothly for the most party, and the mini-glitches the I encountered (for example- having the exercise pop up sooner than I expected it, despite numerous reviews of the slides) served to prepare me better for next time.

We had a really mixed audience- librarians from a number of libraries in the region along with coordinators of library-based literacy programs. This provided for diverse points of view and got some great discussions going. Our panel brought up some excellent points and our participants seemed to enjoy their comments and ideas. I am really excited to see the outcome of the workshop in terms of new programs or new ways of doing things at each of the libraries.

Nancy and I will be presenting at the next workshop on the 8th in Western Massachusetts. I am looking forward to seeing that part of the state (we haven't really left Boston since moving here almost two years ago) and meeting the librarians from that region.
