Spanish Language Computers in the Library
4:30 PM EDT 6/12/07
Hi everyone!

I'm a new technology trainer and project manager in a public library IT department. We have recently received multiple requests to provide Spanish-language interfaces on our public access computers.

I'm in the initial phase of my research of figuring out what we need to consider and what we will need to do in order to provide effective, equal access to electronic resources. If your library currently does so, would you mind sharing the guidelines and best practices that you currently follow?

Thank you in advance.

Hi Heather,
We are actively trying to build this section of our website out, so I hope libraries will answer the call and share their best practices and guidelines.

Check out the guidelines and best practices already on the site at, http://webjunction.org/do/Navigation?category=12766.

Also check out this IFLA article on creating "global" websites.

You might want to take a look at the XP guide here about offering Spanish - when the Gates computers were created on XP, they had loaded on them the XP language packs and those offer the ability to convert "on the fly" between close to 30 languages, including Spanish.
