III's Millennium has a basic Spanish-language interface for its WebPAC.

For a couple of examples of how it has been utilized, try:

Not everything is available in the basic interface - a lot needs to be translated by the library. Much of ours was translated before I got there, but I still had to do a fair amount of translating myself - and there are still some things I either can't change, or haven't yet been able to find to make changes. But, III does make it possible, at least, to have a separate, Spanish-language interface.

I have found on the global learning site, an excellent resource for training in depth concerning the Microsoft products.
The sign-up account is free. And at the bottom of the page, is the link that gives one the same training in Spanish!

Spanish guides for Office 2000 applications

A couple of weeks ago I had printed out a Quick Guide for Word 2000 in Spanish from WebJunction. I wanted to print out guides for more applications for Office 2000, but now I can't even find the one for Word. Has anyone come across these lately, or could they be archived somewhere on WebJunction? I'm a new user and still feeling my way around. Thanks!

You might want to take a look at the XP guide here about offering Spanish - when the Gates computers were created on XP, they had loaded on them the XP language packs and those offer the ability to convert "on the fly" between close to 30 languages, including Spanish.

Spanish Language Computers in the Library

Hi everyone!

I'm a new technology trainer and project manager in a public library IT department. We have recently received multiple requests to provide Spanish-language interfaces on our public access computers.

I'm in the initial phase of my research of figuring out what we need to consider and what we will need to do in order to provide effective, equal access to electronic resources. If your library currently does so, would you mind sharing the guidelines and best practices that you currently follow?

Hi Bruce,

Your right, I think the program looks like a great opportunity for libraries, especially those who are already participating in the SLO program and focusing on implementing outreach to Spanish Speakers.

The La Familia website is having problems this morning but last week I was also able to register and there are some great resources and programming ideas available on the site.

I have emailed the project coordinator to find out if other libraries have participated. I will share what I find out.

Gee, I almost want to keep information about this limited to my Minnesota libraries. I browsed through La Familia's web site by registering for free and discovered it provides grants up to $1,500 through an on-line grants application. The grants are independent of the Technology Week promotion.

According to an IBM press release at the IBM.com web site, this is the second consecutive year that IBM is the lead sponsor for Technology Week.

I think "de Internet" is more appropriate and that's what we use in San Francisco.

I think you have a VERY valid question. Translations are tricky, especially when you are trying to translate technology jargon. I am not a Spanish speaker but I did a quick search and found a translation of the Baltimore County Public Libraries Acceptable Computer Use policy: http://www.bcpl.info/disclaimer_es.html

It looks like they have translated "use of the Internet" as "uso de Internet"

Perhaps we can get one of our Spanish speaking trainers or participants to weigh in on this questions too.

Internet Policy translation

Hello - this may sound silly but I need some input! We are currently in the process of translating our policy regarding the use of the Internet with the help of 2 Spanish-speaking volunteers. They can't agree on how to translate "the Internet" and I need some experts to settle the issue. For example, our title is "Use of the Internet." One translates this as "Uso del Internet" and the other insists it is better as "Uso de Internet." I've looked online and have seen both formats (as well as others such as "la Internet"). Is there a standard way of referring to the Internet in Spanish?

Yes, our library is currently offering basic computer/Internet classes in Spanish. It's a 30-minute fundamental Internet class that teaches patrons the basic features of Internet Explorer (IE), and basic research skills. It is also a brief walk-through of some of the online services the library offers (catalog, databases, etc). Our branch library is fortunate to have the funding for a computer aide who teaches patrons who register for the basic class. We basically reserved 2 computer stations and do a simple step-by-step walk through of the IE and the library's homepage.

Internet Safety for Spanish-Speaking Families

Hi Everyone,

I recently found a site (http://www.getnetwise.org/) that discusses, among other things, Internet safety for children. It features a section in Spanish (specifically http://kids.getnetwise.org/kidsites/morespanishsites).

In my work, I have met Spanish-speaking parents who obtain computers for their children and get the house hooked up for Internet service. These mothers and fathers are usually trying to make sure that their children do well in school. However, for the most part, they have no idea how to log onto or use the computer, have never heard of parental control features, don't realize that their children can talk to unsavory characters via chat rooms....you get the picture.

I'm not sure if most computer classes for Spanish-speakers address Internet safety issues adequately, if at all.

Any comments, or suggestions for other sites?

Thanks for jumping into the conversation. I too would be interested to know if there are other libraries out there who are providing relevant local online content for their customers who don't speak English.

The El Portal Latino, the Spanish Language web site of the Suffolk County Public Libraries, NY (http://latino.suffolk.lib.ny.us/index.html )has a lot of great content but I am not sure how much of the info is localized. It looks like it also links to your site.

My guess is that many libraries are struggling to make their own sites available in other languages and aren't yet able to provide the depth of content that your library provides. Kudos to you for being on the leading edge.
