Here are some additional Día resources posted to REFORMANet by Oralia Garza de Cortes:

"If you are planning a Dia de los ninos/Dia de los libros program in your library or community this Spring and would like some free materials, check out the enhanced Dia web site at : www.ala.org/dia
and take a look at the free materials being offered by Peachtree Publishers, Random House, Tricycle Press and Simon and Schuster. HarperCollins/Rayo will also have a poster but it is not yet available.

To obtain the free materials, you must contact the publisher directly. Direct links to the publishers are also available on the Dia web page at: http://www.ala.org/ala/alsc/diadelosninos/partnersandsponsors/partnersandsponsors.cfm

ALA graphics also has Dora the Explorer bookmarks and poster for purchase. See the ALA Graphics website at: http://www.alastore.ala.org/SiteSolution.taf?_sn=catalog&_pn=sub_category&_op=105

You may also be interested to know that the Association of American Publishers has also complied a list of titles to promote Dia. The two-part list was compiled by their Latino Voices in America Task Force. The list is available at: http://www.getcaughtreading.org/pressreleases/dia_pr.htm#reading%20list .
REFORMA is also featured prominently on their Dia press release, also available online at: http://www.getcaughtreading.org/pressreleases/dia_pr.htm

If you see any of these publishers or organizations at state library conferences, at ALA annual, or at BookExpo, please stop by and acknowledge their contributions.

Be sure to register your event with the Dia site and receive up to 200 free bilingual brochures.
The brochure will also be available as a free downloadable file. Check the Dia web site for availability."

I'm planning a family night for El dia de los ninos. I'd like to get a couple of well-known members of the Hispanic community to read (pre-chosen) picture books, do some storytelling and have parents and children share stories and put together a very uncomplicated streamer to wave. Any helpful hints/suggestions? I'm thinking of approaching Hispanic grocery stores for help with refeshments. Our library serves the Hispanic community in Wichita, and we're struggling to get them to attend our programs. We advertise on Spanish radio and newspapers, and promote through schools.

Hello Carol, have you considered partnering with a Latino Organization such as Migrant Education? They would be a great resource because they would bring their families to your program. Advertising in the community will also help, and maybe churches serving Spanish Speakers would also be able to help. Also consider ESL teachers. They might be great advocates for your program.
Hope this helps, Ineavelle Ruiz (Reading, PA)

Thanks! I'll check into those places.

While sitting and staring at the wall today, I came up with the idea of taking photos of Hispanic business owners and community leaders reading a book and posting them on our bulletin board display for the event.

Perhaps I need to sit and stare more often.

I heard once that 20% of Google's employee time was designated as "thinking time". There's something to just sitting and staring.

I love your idea - it's a little like the the idea of localized "READ" posters, which Harper College Library in Illinois created, but instead of using staff, you could use local community members.
