Dana suggested during our training that we collect audio resources for librarians - so that they can practice spanish for use in libraries.

I found a couple of sources for audio tapes that look good and are reasonably priced:
http://www.accelerated-learning.com/shop/default.asp

http://www.champs-elysees.com/products/spanish/default.aspx

Also check out Amazon. On the site I've posted a few resources for library Spanish - you can find these links under General Spanish Language Outreach Information. Hope this helps!

I manage the course list in WJ's Learning Center, so would also consider putting an online beginning Spanish course up if anyone knows of one.

I am also looking for e-learning courses in Spanish to help train non-English speaking librarians around the world in technology topics, so let me know if anyone comes across any.

Audio Resources for staff education is great but this doesn't teach them the basics of communicating with the public. Library terminology is not taught in basic spanish language classes. Does anyone have a script of basic questions and answers that a library staff member would be able to utilize? Or do you have the capability of developing such a script?

I took a Speed Spanish course at my library and one of the things that our instructor gave us is useful library phrases and a connection to a website for library glossaries. The address is http://www.unm.edu/~emmons/nmla/spanish-library-jargon.html.

I have a few other handouts that were printed copies only with different information. Anyone who wants these can send me their mailing address and I would be happy to copy and send them. They are multiple pages and I do not want to type them all over.

I wanted to point out this great resource by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission that was posted in another topic on Spanish Library Signage: http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/ld/projects/bilingualsign/index.html

The site includes audio files to assist library staff in pronunciation of common Library signage in Spanish (i.e. Favor de no reponer los libros en los estantes - please, do not reselve books).

Thanks to Dodie Owens for posting this resource in the Workshop Participant Forum!

The BBC has a great website with free Spanish language resources. Their free courses are interactive and include audio and video clips. A great way to get started!

Welcome Michael and thanks for posting the link to these BBC Spanish courses! The on-line courses look useful and free is a very good price. The sections that are geared towards travel make me want to grab my backpack and head for Spain...

I also noticed that the BBC seems to have a very good Spanish language news site that might interest Spanish speaking patrons: BBC Mundo: http://www.news.bbc.co.uk/hi/spanish/news/

I am not aware of a online course that teaches Basic Spanish tailored to Librarians. However, one great resource in Infopeople's Survival Spanish for Library Staff. You can download the course guide and all the audio tracks from the class on WebJunction at: http://www.webjunction.org/do/DisplayContent?id=14365

Here are a couple other online tutorials:
Dictionary of Spanish and English: http://www.spanishdict.com
Spanish-Kit : Spanish Learning Tools: http://www.spanish-kit.net

There are also some helpful links and guides on our Spanish for Library Staff page at: http://www.webjunction.org/do/Navigation?category=10564

If you DO find an online course teaching Basic Spanish for Librarians, please let us all know!

Hi all,

Here is another resource for library staff interested in learning spanish. www.learnspanishtoday.com

Even though this site is a vendor, you can still access quite a bit of content for free!

And for those of us who like to learn from an actual person, there's a great resource <a href="http://speakshop.com/">Speak Shop</a>. You can learn Spanish online via webcam from a Spanish teachers at Probigua in Guatemala. The other great thing about this project is a portion of the lesson fees go to <a href="http://probigua.org/">Probigua</a> who build and maintain libraries in rural Guatemala. Another bonus - since these teachers work in a library project, they are probably familiar with library terminology in Spanish.

SpanishSense is an amazing site where you can learn Spanish! It's set up in a Web 2.0 environment where you can subscribe to a podcast feed and converse with others learning along with you. You can be a Newbie, Elementary, Intermediate, etc. I'm brushing up on my rusty knowledge!
