Chess... a game for everybody! / Ajedrez... ¡un juego para todos!
11:36 AM EST 1/9/08
From Union County Public Library, Monroe, NC: This past Monday the 7th, we celebrated a program called “Chess... a game for everybody! / Ajedrez... ¡un juego para todos!” For two hours, a group of 15 people from all ages and occupations enjoyed playing this classical multi-cultural game. It was very pleasant, among many sights, to watch a 10 years old English speaker speaking broken Spanish to a 70 yrs old man from Dominican Republic, and a Doctor playing against a construction worker. We even broadcasted the flyers in Russian, since we do have a growing Russian community close to one of our branches. By popular demand, on February 5th, we will be hosting “Chess… so we meet again. / Ajedrez… el reencuentro”.

We strongly recommend hosting this type of simple programs in your Library. You do not even have to worry about supplying the chessboards. Our flyers specified to all players to bring their own. They did.

Chess requires basic verbal communication skills. It creates a distended friendly environment where the Spanish-speaking patrons feel at ease and welcomed to the library. It could also promote interest in books related to the topic. In summary, it is a wonderful game that by nature transcends cultural barriers.
