Translating Shelf Labels

Good afternoon we are in the process of translating some of the shelf labels and we want to make sure they are properly translated. I have searched in the links that Webjuction provides, but I haven't found the following terms:

J ER Easy Readers / Beginning Readers
J EZ Board Books

Can anyone please help?

This is what we've been able to come up with, but we aren't sure if they translate correctly.

J SP ER Libros Básicos/ Lectores Principiantes
J EZ Libros de Cartón

How do other libraries translate these labels?

Hi All!

I am looking for library signs printed in Spanish for the bathroom, etc. that I don't have to pay extra to have customized. Are such signs available in areas that have large poplulations of Spanish speakers?

I would also like a welcome mat in Spanish. I found one that says welcome to our classroom but not to the library.

Does anyone have any good sources to check? I have checked Brodart, The Library Store, and a Childcraft for furniture catalogs.

Hi Everyone,

A workshop participant in Indiana sent me an email looking for a Spanish Poster of the Dewey Decimal System. I thought I would share the resources I was able to find for her on the OCLC site.

It looks like OCLCs Dewey Services sells Spanish Versions of their Find it poster for $15.00:

I also found a place on the OCLC website about current translations of the DDS that are underway. The page lists who to contact for more information about the translation; http://www.oclc.org/dewey/about/translations/

Greetings!

I would recommend these translations for the words/phrases that you posted.

Friends Bookshop to "Venta de Libros." I would not use libreria as it is already a confusing term for non-library users. Friends has no significant meaning and should be avoided.

Returns to "Devoluciones." This is the word that is used in Mexico's public libraries. The common literatal translation used in most US public libraries is "regresar."

Quiet Study to "cuarto de estudio," for room or "sala de estudio" for an area of the library.

Library Catalog to "cata'logo." With an accent over the second a. This is a literal translation. Another common term is "buscar libros," which translates to finding books, although you may also find databases and other services that your library offers.

Ask here to "?Tiene Preguntas?" The first question mark has to be upside down.

Checkout to "Pre'stamos," with an accent mark over e. Another word used in Mexico's public libraries is "salida," which means to exit.

Another word to consider that might have implications for upcoming library services and trends is Self Check. The term should be "auto servicio de pre'stamos."

Thank you very much for your help. The pdf document was definitely helpful. I just realized that we received a copy of the Survival Spanish CD at the Spanish Language Outreach workshop. I will share the file and the CD with our other staff as well.

Welcome to WebJunction! I was able to find several of the terms you mentioned in this pdf from the Infopeople Survival Spanish workshop: http://www.infopeople.org/training/special/ssls_script.pdf

The pdf contains all the phrases that were part of a CD Infopeople created for their Survival Spanish CD. I am thrilled to share that Infopeople has given WebJunction permission to put the audio files from the CD up on our site and they will be available soon.

I wasn't able to find a translation for Friends Bookshop so hopefully one of our native Spanish speakers will chime in too.

We are currently in the process of translating some of our signs to Spanish and I would like to get some suggestions for the following:

*Friends Bookshop
*Returns
*Quiet Study
*Library Catalog
*Ask here-
*Checkout

I've looked at several web pages including the Texas State Lib page, REFORMA and SOL webpage, but I haven't found any translations for these words. Are there any suggestions? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Reserve: Reservar- retener,para uso especial.

It is great to hear that you are working on translating the signage at your library. Another workshop participant suggested the Texas State Library and Archive Commisions site for Spanish Signage suggestions. The site even has sound files. http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/ld/projects/bilingualsign/index.html

It looks like the tsl site suggests the following for translations:
Circulation: Servicio de Préstamo OR
Mostrador de Préstamo
Reference: Servicio de Referencia OR
Servicio de Consulta

I didn't see a suggestions for Reserves. Is anyone else aware of a clear translation for Reserves?

Bilingual signage

I am working on some bilingual (English/Spanish) signage as one of the activities for the outreach program. Here at the college where I work, we have some bilingual professional staff who are trying to come up with clear translations for the following signs:

*Circulation / Reserves
*Reference

I thought I would also submit this to the forum, in case anyone has ideas for what kind of verbiage would be best.

The Texas State Library and Archives Commission has created Spanish language signage suggestions, and (this is cool!) added sound files to assist library staff in pronounciation of these Spanish words!
