Pay differential for Spanish Speaking Staff?
3:48 PM EDT 5/21/08
I am currently gathering information on whether or not any libraries around the country (or elsewhere) institute a pay differential of any sort for Spanish-speaking staff.

If you have any information or examples it would be greatly appreciated. For example: What are the criteria for receiving such an incentive? How much is the incentive?

Thank you very much,
J Gerard

Hi J,

Welcome! I know that the City of Irving Texas has a very good Language Pay Policy. If you pass a spoken language test (right now mostly Spanish and and a few Asian languages), you can get paid up to $150 a month for your skills.

I just sent an email to a librarian there to ask his permision to share their policy document with you.

LA County also offers compensation for bi-lingual employees.

I know that Tulsa City-County Library System is implementing a Compensation Study. I will email a contact there to see if she has any info she can share.

Hi J,

José Ruiz-Álvarez of the Irving (TX) Public Library kindly shared the City of Irving's language ability pay policy. Please see attached and keep us posted on how things shake out in your community.
