Criteria used for selection of Synergy 2010 Participants

SYNERGY:  The Illinois Library Leadership Initiative 2010

April 20-22, 2010, Starved Rock Lodge and Conference Center, Utica, IL
August 3-5, 2010, Pere Marquette Lodge, Grafton, IL
October 26-28, 2010, Hickory Ridge Marriott Conference Hotel, Lisle, IL

SELECTION CRITERIA

1. Master's degree in Library and Information Science and/or School Library Media Specialist (32 hours in Library Science, Type 10 Certification.  Indicate all specific certifications held.  A Teaching Certificate Endorsement is not applicable).

2. Employed in an Illinois library/School Media Center.

3. Demonstration of leadership.

4. Commitment to attend all three leadership sessions and participate in intersession activities.

5. Ability to assume responsibility for all travel and for personal and incidental expenses.

Applicant is responsible for compiling and submitting the complete application in the order requested below (items #1-6).

1. Applicant Confirmation Checklist, please sign and indicate that all documents and agreements are confirmed and attached.

2. Cover letter, using formal letter format, indicating how applicant believes he/she meets each of the Selection Criteria above and listing individually the specific enclosed items requested below. 

3. One-page formal resume.

4. Nomination Letter from any of the following:  director or staff of a regional library system, ILLINET member library director, representative of a state professional association or organization (including but not limited to ILA, ISLMA, IACRL, LIBRAS, CARLI, Illinois Chapter SLA, PALI), a member of the Illinois State Library Leadership Planning Committee.  The writer should provide strong evidence supporting the applicant, based on knowledge of applicant and applicant's special strengths; letter must give examples of applicant's leadership/problem solving abilities and achievements. 

5. Letters of Support (two) from any of the above or from supervisors, former professors, colleagues or librarians who have completed the Synergy: The Illinois Library Leadership Initiative.  Letters should comment strongly on knowledge of applicant, their strengths and examples of applicant's leadership/problem solving abilities and achievements. 

6. One page statement (not bullet points) describing applicant’s achievements (may include community service as well as professional activities), demonstrating leadership potential, aspirations for the future and the qualities the individual possesses as an emerging leader.
