Welcome Native and Indigenous Librarians
3:03 PM EDT 6/20/04
My name is Christina Thompson and I am working with my class at the University of Texas to create a native bridge to WJ. I would like to provide an opportunity for librarians and library workers who work with native libraries to say hello and introduce themselves!

Thanks, Christina, for starting this discussion. I'm Anishinabe (enrolled: White Earth Reservation, Minnesota) and teach in the School of Information at University of Texas at Austin. I work on a number of projects with and for those providing information services in Indian country.

My apoligies for duplicating this message--I meant to post it to this thread! My name is Barbara Cosart, and I am the Special Populations Outreach Coordinator for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, South Central Region (New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas). The NN/LM is the outreach arm of the National Library of Medicine. In addition to training and consultation (all free), we fund outreach and connectivity projects throughout our region. Of particular interest to small public and Tribal libraries is the Library Improvement Project which aims to improve electronic access to health and wellness information. Past recipients of our equipment awards includes the El Pueblo Health Services, Bernalillo, NM, Santa Fe Indian Hospital, Santa Fe, NM, Choctaw Nation Healthcare Center in Talihina, OK, and the Cherokee Nation Health Center in Tahlequah, OK. One of our larger outreach projects we recently funded is the SMILE project, a mental health awareness outreach project in the Four Corners area of New Mexico. This included a tv public service announcement in Navajo. So, if you have a health information/wellness outreach project in mind, or need to improve health information access, please keep us in mind and visit http://nnlm.gov/scr/outrch/fundopp.htm for current information and past recipients. And please feel free to contact me directly at our 800 number.

Hi,Camille,

It's great to hear from you!

Students in the spring 2004 "Library Instruction and Information Literacy" class just completed version 1.0 of a "Native Bridge to WebJunction." You'll find it at http://www.ischool.utexas.edu/~loriene/nativebridge. We're gathering comments so that we can work on revisions over the summer!

Cheers,

Loriene

Hi Cedric, it's good to see an old friend on the boards! emoticon I'm glad you joined us. Everyone, please be sure to check out Cedric's library as a WJ "library of the month" in the archive.

JohnB. I was visiting Oakland last weekend and thought about checking in to see if you were on campus on Friday; my day got away from me. We're glad to have you with us too!

Greetings, indigenous librarians--

We had a great visit last week to tribal school and community libraries in New Mexico, stopping by sites at To'Hajiilee, Tesuque, Santa Clara, Ojo Encino, and Jemez. Thanks for the hospitality and we'll see you again in a couple of months!
